Les Portes du Vaison-la-Romaine

11 Jun

Vaison-la-Romaine is a beautiful town with a history dating back to Roman times.  Separated from the lower town by the Ouvèze river, the haute ville/upper town features narrow, medieval streets meeting at small squares, each of which features a fountain spilling fresh water into carved stone basins.  The doors are pretty neat, too.

The carvings in the stone have been softly worn away, but their details can still be appreciated.

Tile roofs are the norm in Provence and this arch over the doorway reflects that tradition beautifully.

Provençal blue always pleases.

Even in a mini version…

Double the blue is twice as nice.

An interpretation of a cathedral’s stained glass window is magnificent in its artistry.

A local wine-maker’s home perhaps?

He appears ready to step through the doorway at any moment.  Photos like this are featured throughout the village, providing a view of the lives of previous residents.
